News: State Championship Meet
2021
On Saturday November 6th the boys headed to Kernersville for the 3rd time this season to race in the state championship at Ivey Redmon Park. It was a chilly and partially sunny day, but the wind would make the temperature feel very cool. The boys hoped to be in the mix for a top 2 finish, but it would require all of the boys to be healthy and strong at the same time and that was not the case on this day. It was clear early that Mount Tabor and Weddington would battle for the top 2 spots, no one could tell how the rest of the team competition would pan out. Gavin Hansen went out fast and finished as the top boy from the SWAC at the state meet in 19th place (16:08). Behind Gavin three GH runners had incidents where they were stepped on and/or went down, which impacted times and finishing positions. Luke Young ran a very solid 16:17 and finished in 32nd place with senior Zach Taylor only a few spots behind in a time of 16:24. Ben Cale (16:44) and Liam Young (16:56) rounded out the scoring for the Falcons. In the end, even on an “off” day for the boys they pulled out a 3rd place finish in the state. This was quite an accomplishment considering all of the circumstances.
While this is the last official Green Hope race of the 2021 season, many team members will continue training and race in the Nike Southeast Regional at Wake Med on Saturday November 27th. Overall it was a very successful year as the boys won 3 invitationals, won the SWAC Conference Championship, finished 2nd in the Mideast Region and 3rd at the state meet.
