News: JV Conference Championship
2019
The JV Conference Meet was held under slightly different conditions this year as a scheduling issue forced the JV finale to be held one week before the varsity race rather than on the same day. Schools were asked to hold out at least their top 7 runners from this race (as 7 runners form a varsity squad). The 2 JV races took place on the afternoon of October 16th in relatively cool conditions after a rainy morning.
The first race to go off was the boys race and the Falcons expected they would have many front-runners once again. Several went right to the front and the leadpack’s first mile was a blistering 5:02-5:04. That pace would be impossible to maintain, but they set the tone as many runners would fly to new PRs. After aback-and-forth battle, sophomore Jacob Kurak took charge on the final hill and pulled out the victory with a time of 17:12. He was followed by freshman Gavin Hansen (17:18), freshman Colin Whelehan (17:33), sophomore Zach Taylor (17:34), and freshman Luke Young(17:42). The boys scored a perfect 15pts and won the unofficial JV Conference title for the 18th consecutive year.
The second race of the afternoon was the girls race. The girls also expected to set the pace for the field and they did just that. 12 of the 1st 13 finishers were Falcons (including 4 freshmen). It appeared as though it would be a close individual race, but freshman Grace Boughton (21:28) took charge in the last mile and beat out runner-up Anna Tinglestad (10th grade, 21:42) by 14 seconds. Sophomore Kaela Brandon (4th,21:54), junior Kylie Petee (5th, 21:54), and senior Akhila Krothapalli (22:06) rounded out the team scoring as the girls won with a very low score of 18pts.
Overall it was a very good day for the Falcons and the depth and number of younger runners who showed they have continued to improve throughout the season makes the future for the Falcons appear to be very bright. The top 15 boys and top 15 girls will race in the Conference Championship Varsity race on Wednesday October 23rd at 10:00am (boys) and 10:30am (girls).
