News: Falcons post strong showing at Providence Invite
2015
The Falcons traveled to Charlotte the weekend of August 28th for their first 5K of the year, the Providence Invitational. The day of racing has grown to include more than 2100 runners from North Carolina, as well as several other southern states. Fifty-three Falcons laced them up to test themselves and see where the team was at this early point in the season.
The first race of the day was the girls championship. After winning the meet the past three years, the Falcons finished 2nd Saturday to a very strong Riverside (SC) team. Elly Henes led the girls with a 3rd place finish and time of 18:32 and Morgan Adams medaled with an 8th place finish (18:43). Sarah Taylor (19:04), Alessandra Rodriguez (19:16), and Samantha Kolor (19:27) rounded out the scoring.
The boys varsity followed and the guys had one of the best days of racing in school history. They finished 4th to very strong teams from Broughton, Weddington, and Mt. Tabor, as the boys managed a 1-5 average time of 16:11 (and total time of 1:20:56), the top team performance ever for Green Hope. Henry Pehr (15:53), Peyton Barish (16:00), Finn McBride (16:10), Nick Veilleux (16:22), and Cole Hagstrom (16:31) scored points for the Falcons.
The JV girls finished 4th out of 29 teams in their race and were led by freshman Morgan Peele (21:16), freshman Emma Benson (21:28), and sophomore Elizabeth Surratt (21:34).
The final race of the day was the JV boys race. The Green Hope boys dominated the field start to finish, taking 12 of the top 20 finishers in a field of more than 600 runners. Sophomore Ian Delgado won his 2nd straight race by running an excellent time of 16:22 and was joined in the top 5 by Brendan Vasarhelyi (16:58), Alex Huml (17:08), and Daniel Vo (17:09).
The JV and varsity invitational races saw the boys set a single-day school record of having 22 runners on the day run under 18:00.
The Falcons have just under two weeks to prepare for the next big invitational of the year -- the inaugural Friday Night Lights at Ivey Redmon Park in Kernsersville on September 11th.
