News: Seahawk Invitational
2013
On Saturday Sep 7, the Falcons traveled to UNCW to run in the Seahawk Invitational for the 11th time in 12 years. It was another very good day for the team, as the girls and boys competed in 6 races on a course just a shade over a 5K in length.
The first race of the morning was the boys championship race, but the boys were never really in the mix as a team. After a good team performance at Providence, the guys had a large pack for much of the race, but were a little off, finishing in seventh place. The Falcons were led by Tom Nobles (16:31), Carter Luxv (17:24), and Brad Pehr (17:25).
The girls varsity followed with another invitational victory by beating Providence 72-105 to win the Seahawk Invitational for the fifth straight year. The girls went out in a pack and worked as a group to pull out the win and were led by Elly Henes (19:24), Katie Tomasi (19:47), and Kelly Fitzgerald (19:48).
In the boys JV Race (2nd 7 runners), Corey Colberg made a move a little before the halfway mark and ran away with the victory (17:53). The boys finished second (to a strong Apex squad) out of 27 teams. Brian Huitt (18:18) and Ted MacCabe (18:20) also had top 10 finishes.
Julia Zwierzynski (20:27) won the JV girls race for the second straight year and the girls dominated the race as all 7 runners finished in the top 9 (173 total runners). Julia was followed by Martina Savage (20:53) and Elisa Sargent (20:57).
The Falcons boys cruised in the Developmental race with all 10 runners finishing in the top 13 (out of 164 total runners). Patrick Stylski led most of the race and claimed 1st place (18:18) with Owen Dreikosen close behind (18:29).
The final race of the day was the Developmental girls and the girls team made it a clean sweep of all 3 girls races as they scored a perfect 15 pts to beat 12 other teams. Freshman Samantha Kolor made a move less than ½ a mile in and led from there to cruise to her 1st invitational win. She was followed in the top 5 by Anastasia Horvat (21:33), Katie Surratt (21:47), and Julia England (21:50).
The invitational season for the Falcons takes a 3 week break and resumes September 28 at the Greensboro Invitational at Hagan Stone Park.
