News: Great American Cross Country Festival
2011
Great job to everyone who raced in the Great American Cross Country Festival at Wake Med Park on October 1st. The day was marked by lots of PRs, but highlighted by Erica Amatori (17:58) and Lauren Colberg (17:59) becoming the 1st GHXC female runners to break the 18:00 barrier. Congrats!!! Here were the highlights of the day of racing:
Community Race: 4 GH runners participated in the first race of the day and all 4 set personal records by 30 seconds or more. The runners were Parker Manning, Ashish Amin, Jacob Veilleux, and Matt Agius.
Girls Red Invitational: The meet directors hesitated in allowing the GH girls B team to enter this race against many A teams, as they were not sure our girls could compete. Boy were they wrong!! The team finished 2nd, only behind national power Saratoga Springs and 6 girls set PRs. The girls were led by Theresa Enright's 19:03. Taylor Howard (20:01), Shannon Scovel (20:10), Mary Alex England (20:14), Rose Kim (20:30), Kristin Lospinoso (20:47), and Katie Surratt (21:38) made up the rest of the runner-up squad.
Girls Race of Champions: This was the marquee race of the day and the girls hoped to compete for one of the top 2 spots even without one of their top runners. In the end the girls placed 4th behind national powers Saratoga Springs (NY) and Tatnall (DE) and a strong Assumption (KY team). While several of the girls ran PRs, Colberg and Amatori earned top 10 finishes to become the first girls to break 18:00 at GH. Jessie Rossabi (18:35), Allie Worsdale (19:07), Taylor Buscemi (19:36), Savannah Lips (19:50), and Sarah Alexander (20:19) rounded out the team.
Boys Seeded Race: The boys varsity team ran in the 2nd level race which had a very strong field of teams. 6 of the 7 runners ran career PRs, as the team was led by Tom Nobles (16:34) and Daniel Glover (16:53). Corey Colberg (17:11), Ryan Hefner (17:28), Jordan Rawlings (17:31), Mahmoud Saad (17:47) and Quinn Stanley (17:50) also ran very well.
GH ran JV teams in 2 boys races and 2 girls races and all runners had good days of racing. The boys had 3 runners under 18:00 in the JV races and 6 more under 19:00, while the girls had 7 runners under 24:00 in the two races. Overall it was a good day at Wake med. Next up for the Falcons is the 4 Runner Invitational in Kernersville on October 8th.
