The Falcons traveled to Kernersville on Friday for the final invitational of the year on Saturday October 11. The NC Runners Elite Invitational includes the 9-10 Race which has been dubbed the “unofficial JV state championship” for many years. Traditionally, Green Hope does very well at this event, and this year was no different.

Coach Miragliuolo and seven boys got to the course bright and early for the Boys Invitational Race to start the day. Matched up against top squads from every other school in the race, a mix of Falcon runners pulled out a 6th place finish with several runners setting new PRs. The squad was led by junior Daimon Raper, as he broke 18:00 (17:59) in only his 3rd official 5K. He was followed by Matthew Spivey (18:21), Sean Petersen (18:27), Nick Brady (18:31), and Srikar Chedalavada (18:59).

Two hours after the start of the first race, the Boys 9-10 race went off. The young Falcons expected to do well as a team, and several of them ran personal bests en route to a convincing team championship (51 points to 108 for second-place Panther Creek) in the 22 team race. Matthew Kehn (17:34), Cloe Hagstrom (17:45), Peyton Barish (17:48), Daniel Vo (17:56), and Ryan Wagner (18:21) scored for the Falcons.

The Girls 9-10 race was next and the Falcons battled Providence right to the end as they were edged out 38-42 to earn the runner-up position. While the girls just missed the team title, sophomores Emily Jordan (19:53) and Samantha Kolor (20:09) finished 1-2. They were followed by Lauren McLaughlin (21:04), Elizabeth Surratt (21:29), and Summer Hanks (21:46).

The final race of the day involving Green Hope runners was the Boys Open Race. GH entered six more freshmen and sophomores in the race and 3 of the 6 runners set new 5K bests. The first GH runner was Kyle Futterman (19:12). He was followed by Julian Lobo (20:12) and Evan Delvecchio (20:15).

With a talented group of younger runners, the future looks bright for the Falcons. The final race of the year for most of the team will be the SWAC Championship on Wednesday, October 15, at the WakeMed Cross Country Course. All runners will race and the schedule is:

  • 4:00: Boys Varsity
  • 4:25: Girls Varsity
  • 4:50: Boys JV
  • 5:20: Girls JV
