The Falcons hosted the 4A Mideast Regional at Wake Med Soccer Park on Saturday, October 25th. It was a busy morning as the 4A Mideast Region, 1A Mideast, and 3A Mideast all competed at Wake Med. There is always a lot of pressure on teams when running in the regional meet as the top four boys teams and top four girls teams (and top 5 individuals not on a qualifying team) at the end of the day advance to the state championship.

The boys team ran in the third race of the day on a perfect October morning for racing. As the race unfolded, it became obvious that it would be a battle for the 3rd and 4th state qualifying spots (behind Broughton and Apex). There were a lot of nervous runners and parents who waited around for the next two hours before finding out that the boys had indeed qualified for States again. Green Hope finished a mere two points behind Millbrook in 4th and ahead of 5th place Sanderson by 16 points. Four of the seven boys set their career PRs in the race, led by All-Region member Henry Pehr (16:07). The state meet-qualifying boys:

  • Henry Pehr (16:07, PR)
  • Nick Veilleux (16:37, PR)
  • Brian Huitt (16:53)
  • Michael Dudash (16:56, PR)
  • Matthew Kehn (17:07, PR)
  • Michael Kolor (17:24)
  • Brendan Vasarhelyi (17:35)

The fifth race of the day was the girls 4A race, and the temperature was very nice for racing by 11:00 AM. The girls went out and cruised to their 7th consecutive regional title and 9th in school history to also qualify for next weekend’s state championship meet. The girls ran some very good times and were led by Elly Henes's 1st place finish. Elly became the first Green Hope runner to win the Mideast Regional individual title. The girls who qualified for the state meet include:

  • Elly Henes (17:53)
  • Katie Tomasi (18:35, PR)
  • Morgan Adams (18:40, PR)
  • Kelly Fitzgerald (19:01)
  • Elisa Sargent (19:06)
  • Theresa Enright (19:15)
  • Kayla Hall (19:15)

Earning first team All-Region honors were Henry Pehr, Elly Henes, Katie Tomasi, Morgan Adams, Kelly Fitzgerald, and Elisa Sargent. Earning second team All-Region status were Theresa Enright and Kayla Hall.

Thank you to all the parents and athletes who helped pull off another successful regional race. This marked the sixth straight year Green Hope has hosted the 24 team regional meet. It takes a lot of people to pull off such an event. More than anything, a big congratulations to all the athletes who have worked so hard this year and best of luck to both teams at the state meet next weekend.
